10 Ways How To Prevent Sweating While Dancing


Sweating is a natural way of regulating the body’s temperature, but most people find it undesirable in certain social situations, such as dancing. This topic is too close to home, meaning sweating is something I struggle with while dancing. Some strategies have helped me reduce how much I sweat while dancing, and I will share those strategies with you in this article. 

I have been taking dance classes for a while now, but every time I go to a dance class, I think of ways to reduce or hide how much I sweat. I know that people don’t think much about it, but I always feel uncomfortable when it happens. 

Here are strategies on how to stop sweating while dancing:

Top 10 Strategies To Prevent Sweating While Dancing Explained 

Use clinical antiperspirant for sweat treatment 

I want to talk about antiperspirant first because it is one of the most effective treatments for sweating, based on my experience. This is why I recommend using Certain Dri Clinical Antiperspirant.  

Certain Dri is the number 1 doctor recommended clinical antiperspirant for excessive sweating. It is very effective, especially if you apply it much sooner before your dance session (preferably the night before) because it takes some time to activate. It is effective up to 72 hours after you apply it, but make sure you apply a regular deodorant before the dance session for a pleasant smell because Certain Dri is unscented.

I implemented another trick if you want to cover other areas where you sweat the most, not just underarms. I like using Degree UltraClear Antiperspirant and applying it at least six hours before the dance session, and I would spray it on the areas where I sweat the most, such as the underarms, back, chest area, and even stomach. 

It reduces the amount of sweat it comes through your body. I am thrilled that it works because the last thing I want is for my dance partner put his hands on my back while dancing and for my back to be wet. Ouch, and yes, that has happened in the past, haha.

Opt for breathable and lightweight fabrics

I highly recommend wearing breathable and lightweight fabrics while dancing. 

Opt for cotton fabrics because cotton is one of the most breathable fabrics because its natural fiber design is loose compared to synthetic fibers like polyester. 

A good quality, lightweight cotton is one of the most breathable fabrics around, so it will allow a little airflow for drying out the dampness. Some advantages of cotton include its absorbency, softness, and hypoallergenic nature, making it more comfortable in sweaty situations, such as dancing. Cotton is a natural fiber that absorbs moisture rather than repels it. 

Choose something other than polyester fabric. Polyester is not that breathable, so if you sweat while dancing, you should avoid this fabric. Polyester is heavier and denser than cotton and is also hydrophobic, which causes it to trap moisture and cling to sweaty skin. Lots of sweat with nowhere to go could cause discomfort and irritation.  

And as I get ready for my dance class that starts in one hour, I am looking for cotton fabrics in my closet 🙂 

Choose clothes of darker colors

Dark is the best color you can wear to conceal sweating. It won’t reduce the amount of sweat, but sweat patches will be less noticeable. The most effective colors to wear to hide sweat are black and navy. 

Colors such as brown and burgundy (dark red) are also good options. On the contrary, light colors such as white are also a good choice, and avoid any colors in between. 

Ultimately, you want to stick to the colors on a very light or dark palette to control your sweating better. 

Avoid bright colors such as hot pink because sweat patches will be very noticeable. 

Avoid body lotion and makeup 

I noticed that I sweat more whenever I apply body lotion after I take a shower and go to dancing lessons. 

You can use body lotion but not immediately before the dance class because your body needs more time to absorb the cream. 

If you sweat a lot after you apply body lotion, it could mean that you have oily skin. Naturally, oil glands are more active and become overactive and clogged. Also, it could mean that the moisturizer you are using could have certain ingredients clogging up the pores, causing you to sweat more. 

The same rule goes for makeup. Wearing a lot of makeup while dancing can make your face sweat more, and I suggest wearing minimal makeup or no makeup at all. 

If you want to wear makeup, use all oil-free, matte, long-lasting, and waterproof products. Include primer and seal the makeup with a good matte setting spray.

Avoid certain foods 

Some food groups will make your body sweat more than others, so avoiding those foods at all costs is essential to prevent sweating during the dance session. 

An unhealthy diet and sweating go hand in hand together. So it is important to avoid unhealthy foods such as fast food, highly processed, fatty, junk food, and foods that are low in fiber, as these foods are hard to digest. 

Your body works twice as hard to make up for this, and it takes your body twice as long to digest. It causes your body temperature to rise, making you sweat more. 

Limit caffeine 

Although coffee provides many benefits, caffeine can cause side effects that negatively influence the quality of life for certain people. This is especially true for people who sweat a lot. For people who already struggle with sweating, adding caffeine can cause a bad issue to become worse.

Caffeine can induce sweating even when consumed in lower doses, so you need to understand how caffeine affects your body. 

I realized that coffee makes my body sweat more, so I don’t drink coffee at all on the day of dance class, which makes a huge difference. 

Stay hydrated 

Sweat plays a crucial role in keeping your body cool in hot temperatures. Drinking enough fluids is key to keeping this internal air conditioning system properly.

So I recommend drinking lots of water before the dance lesson or dance event but not too much, so you don’t run to the washroom every five minutes. That wouldn’t be fun, haha. 

Also, keep a bottle of water close by. Drinking plenty of water will make a tremendous difference in reducing how much you sweat while dancing. 

Keep cool 

This is not a brainer, but keeping cool will reduce how much you sweat while dancing. Sweating is your body’s way of cooling you down, reducing the need to sweat by staying cool. 

You can ask your dance instructor to reduce the temperature before the class begins to make you feel more comfortable when you start dancing. It may be a bit chill initially, but your body will appreciate it once you warm up. 

Try natural remedies

Natural remedies may be very beneficial in your journey of preventing and reducing how much you sweat while dancing. 

Drinking hot beverages like green or black seems counterintuitive to preventing sweat. But green tea contains magnesium and Vitamin B, constricting your sweat glands and keeping you calm. 

Try trading your morning coffee for green tea to get in on these sweat-reducing benefits.

Another effective natural remedy would be applying tea tree oil to your underarms. Like tea and vinegar, tea tree oil is an astringent to fight sweat-causing bacteria. Soak a cotton ball in tea tree oil, and apply it on your underarms daily. You should see start noticing improvements in a few days. 

I recommend using both of these natural remedies together for the best results. 

Talk to your doctor 

In most cases, my recommended tips will work because they work for me, and I sweat a lot. But it might be a good idea to talk to your doctor about other methods if you still sweat a lot after applying my recommendations. I won’t get into this topic because it is not my area of expertise, but it could be an avenue you could visit if something else is needed.
